King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, meaning Norway has a new king. What was his cause of death? How did King Harald die?
Harald was hospitalized for “a rare blood condition,” People reported, adding that his condition worsened after he was hospitalized on August 17, and he developed a “bloodstream bacterial infection.” The formal cause of death was not announced, however. According to the Guardian, his condition was “caused by an abnormally rapid destruction of the body’s red blood cells.”
King Harald was Europe’s oldest living monarch at the time of his death and considered a figure of stability.
King Harald Developed Blood Disease, the Royal Court Revealed
In a previous statement, the royal court revealed more details of King Harald’s health issues.
“The King has been treated with cortisone for the blood disease hemolytic anemia in recent weeks. This has led to fluid accumulation in the body that requires treatment in hospital,” the royal family announced before his death, People reported.
The king also had surgery for bladder cancer in 2023.
His death was announced by the royal family on August 28. “It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away. King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet Friday 28 August at 6:35 a.m.,” the statement reads.
The new King is Harald’s only son, Haakon.
The Royal Family Announced the King’s Condition Had ‘Deteriorated’ the Day Before His Death

On August 27, the royal family announced, “His Majesty the King’s health has deteriorated. His Majesty the King’s health condition is very serious.”
Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, and other royals rushed to his bedside, People reported.
According to Fox News, Harald has had health issues for some time; in 2024, he received a pacemaker.
“An era has ended. A new one begins. The king is dead. Long live the king,” the prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, said, according to The Guardian, which quoted new King Haakon as thanking “the government and Norwegian people for their support and sympathy for the royal family at this time.”
The new king and queen bring controversy with them, notably her communications with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, which she has said she regrets, The Guardian reported, adding that she has had her own health issues, including a lung transplant.
In addition, the new queen’s son Marius Borg Høiby was convicted of rape and other charges and sentenced to prison.
King Harald was a beloved figure in Norway, who competed in Olympic sailing competitions for his country. He was a descendant of Queen Victoria. Crowds mourned the king, gathering with flowers. Harald was “Norway’s first king born on Norwegian soil since the 14th century,” according to Al-Jazeera. He fled with his mother to the United States after the Nazis invaded Norway. After a mass murderer killed 77 people in Norway, he gave a beloved speech, saying, “I remain convinced that the belief in freedom is stronger than fear.”
