Today, more and more NBA players are taking advantage of off-the-court opportunities.
San Antonio Spurs veteran forward Harrison Barnes is the latest example, as the 34-year-old recently purchased Community State Bank in Paton, Iowa, according to Paul Davis for the Bank Slate. He has invested $25 million of his own money into the bank.
Barnes was born in Ames, Iowa, in 1992 and went to Ames High School, where he was rated the No. 1 high school basketball recruit in the United States during his senior year in 2010.

Barnes played college basketball at the University of North Carolina for two seasons before being selected by the Golden State Warriors with the seventh overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.
He studied in North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, where he pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Finance.
Fast-forward to 2026, and while actively playing in the NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs this past June, Barnes enrolled in the Iowa School for Banking, a professional development program managed by the Iowa Bankers Association.
His purchase of Community State in Paton, Iowa, a town with a population of around 220, comes as Barnes has accumulated $224.1 million over his NBA career, according to Spotrac.

While his role on the court has decreased, evident by his 52 starts last season compared to starting all 82 games the year prior, Barnes remains a valuable presence on a young Spurs team, providing veteran experience and leadership.
