While currently competing as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, conservationist Robert Irwin took to Instagram to share an update on his pug, Stella. Irwin revealed an "unfortunate update" on October 12 of Stella being diagnosed with cancer.
"This is a tough one," he wrote. "I wanted to give an unfortunate update on my sweet little pup, Stella. A mass was discovered that ended up being cancerous."
Alongside a black-and-white photo of him and Stella, he' still optimistic as he details not knowing the full extent of the cancer. Irwin's had an "emotional week" with him currently in Los Angeles filming the dance competition series while Stella remains in Australia.
"I have faith she’ll be in the clear. She is such an important part of our little fam, so it’s been stressful to say the least being away from home and away from her while she goes through this," he wrote.
"I know you guys love seeing her and I love sharing her with you so wanted to give an update… she is doing ok post-surgery so far, she’s my little bestie & one tough cookie."
His fellow DWTS co-stars have commented with heartfelt messages since he shared the news. Irwin's mother, Teri, and his sister, Bindi, also commented on his post, showing their support for the beloved family pug.
"She’s such a strong and beautiful little soul," wrote Bindi, with his mother commenting, "Every day is another day of healing. She is a determined little soul!"
Robert Irwin joined DWTS Season 34 and partnered with professional dancer Witney Carson. So far, he's been a fan favorite, receiving high scores from the judges. He's scheduled to perform a contemporary dance on October 14 for tribute week dedicated to his mother.
