A string of store closures has sparked an emergency meeting in a major city.
Kroger announced that the grocery store chain will be closing 60 stores throughout the U.S. In Milwaukee, the closing stores bear the Pick 'n Save name, but they fall under the Kroger umbrella. Five are closing in that city.
One of the five stores is located in a neighborhood called Metcalfe Park. The Pick 'n Save near 35th and Meinecke plans to close July 18, and that's upsetting some people in the area, according to WISN-TV.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that Kroger says the closures "are part of a decision to run more efficiently and ensure Kroger's long-term health," but city officials have decried the Wisconsin closures.
"Dozens of concerned community members" turned out for an emergency meeting on the closure, the television station reported. Fox 6 described it as an "emergency town hall meeting" and said it unfolded on July 7.
"Our community deserves a grocery store," Melody McCurtis, lead organizer for the group said, according to WISN-TV. "We deserve more than July 18. We deserve more than that. We deserve notice."
According to Fox 6, people at the meeting said they learned the store was closing on Facebook. The Metcalfe Park store opened in 2001 to fanfare and helped boost the neighborhood, the Journal Sentinel reported.
"I thought it was convenient. That’s why I moved over here, close by it. Now they’re taking it away," said resident Shirley Dunn to Fox 6. "I’ve been here for eight years. That’s the only store I know."
According to WISN-TV, the closing locations, which are in different areas of Milwaukee County, are at 1735 W. Silver Spring Drive, Glendale; 3701 S. 27th Street, Milwaukee; 2355 N. 35th Street, Milwaukee; 2931 S. Chicago Avenue, South Milwaukee; and 2320 W. Ryan Road, Oak Creek.
