When Margaret Qualley became nationally recognized for her star role in the 2021 miniseries Maid, people didn't really know who she was. Sure, she had a recurring role on the critically acclaimed television series The Leftovers and appeared briefly in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, but she was by no means a household name. It wasn't until she starred as Alex, a young mom who makes a living as a housekeeper after leaving an abusive relationship, in Maid that people started to question her background. And now she's buzzing in headlines thanks to her role opposite Demi Moore in the Oscar-nominated The Substance. It turns out Qualley's mom is a former model and a well-known actress, Andie MacDowell, who also plays her harebrained mom in Maid.
If you've seen any handful of movies in the last three decades, there's a good chance you know MacDowell. She's especially regarded for her roles in Groundhog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Andie MacDowell's Career in Entertainment
Born in Gaffney, SC, MacDowell has spoken on the chaos of her childhood living with an alcoholic mother. While she said the manic characteristics that her character possesses in Maid don't represent her mom, she knows what it's like to have a disordered upbringing.
"My mother is not Paula," she told NPR. "But understanding the complexity of mental illness was something that I'm versed in... I know what darkness is. There was a lot of darkness in my house due to the chaos and the depression and the drinking."
When she was around 19 or 20, MacDowell was discovered by a representative from Wilhelmina Models while on a trip to Los Angeles. After this, she signed with Elite Model Management in New York City and moved to Paris shortly after.
Her early years in the entertainment industry were filled with magazine appearances and billboards in Times Square for brands such as Vogue, Yves Saint Laurent, Vassarette, Armani, Calvin Klein, and beyond.
Her appearance in commercials for Calvin Klein in the 1980s was ultimately what led her to a career in acting. Her first film, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, didn't exactly gain her national attention, but it did lead to more roles in film.

Throughout the '80s and '90s, MacDowell featured in print and television advertisements for L'Oréal, and popped in more movies such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape, which earned her an Independent Spirit Award, a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and more. She also appeared in the romantic comedy film Green Card alongside Gérard Depardieu, The Object of Beauty, The Player, and more.
In 1993, she starred opposite Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, a beloved film about a cynical TV weatherman who finds himself reliving the same day over and over again. Her performance as Rita had a long-lasting effect, with critics praising her for the role.
"For me, Groundhog Day was a perfect movie," she told People in 2023. "It's sort of like [It's] a Wonderful Life, in that you watch this movie and it makes you realize how gorgeous life is and how to be a good person. There's a really deep message to it, and I think that's what makes it—on top of it being just fun—so beautiful."
MacDowell starred in a handful of other movies before ultimately landing the job as Alex's mom in Maid in 2021. Although the series is known for putting her daughter on the map, it also landed MacDowell a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress—Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.
While most people talk about nepotism in reference to the children of famous actors/actresses, MacDowell told Jimmy Fallon that it's given her a boost in the reverse direction: "I'm now cool because I'm Margaret Qualley's mom."
