Authorities have issued a chilling update in the two-year-old case of missing tourist Alex Hodgson Doughty, 32, who vanished in Sept. 2022.

Doughty, who was visiting from his native England, was last seen in Jacksonville, FL, on Sept. 11, 2022, getting into a taxi which was to take him to Kingsland, FL. He was reported missing by his mother, who shared with authorities her “concern for his well-being.” On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the FBI announced that they had recovered and positively identified Doughty’s remains from a wooded area on a piece of private property in Kingsland.

“While we had hoped to bring Mr. Doughty’s family better news, we are thankful to be able to provide them with some closure," Special Agent in Charge Kristin Rehler said. "This discovery is the direct result of our partnerships and special agents from FBI Jacksonville’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST), who were relentless in their efforts to narrow down potential search locations."

Ultimately, the FBI was able to track the location of Doughty’s remains using phone-based technology. "This isn't a traditional investigative technique, such as interviews,” an official told First Coast News. “We used phone-based location information and geolocation information derived from electronics we surround ourselves with every day to retrace their footsteps and to narrow a search area."

No criminal charges are expected to be filed in relation to Doughty’s death.

The discovery puts an end to a fruitless search on behalf of multiple organizations both domestic and abroad, including Jacksonville’s FBI Division, State Attorney’s Office, and Sheriff’s Office, as well as the U.K.’s Thames Valley police and Florida’s Kingsland Police Department.
