Nearly three months into its theatrical release, Deadpool & Wolverine is still breaking records. It’s not all that surprising considering the film was demolishing milestones months before it hit cinemas.
This weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine surpassed the domestic gross of Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s juggernaut comedy which dominated box office charts last year. Deadpool & Wolverine now ranks 12th on the list of highest-grossing films in North America, while Barbie has been demoted to number 13. The raunchy superhero comedy earned $636.3 million in the U.S., while Barbie topped at $636.2 million. Deadpool & Wolverine will certainly earn more, but it’s unlikely to topple Inside Out 2—2024’s highest-grossing film to date with $652.9 million domestically—from the number 11 spot.
The last-minute record comes just as Deadpool & Wolverine is departing theaters. It earned a muted $679,000 over the weekend in 1,500 theaters after Disney expanded the film from the previous weekend’s 900 theaters to capitalize on the film’s last few weeks in cinemas.
However, despite the North American upset, Barbie is still ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine in terms of international grosses. Barbie has earned $1.466 billion globally, while Deadpool & Wolverine has taken in $1.335 billion worldwide.
Deadpool & Wolverine has broken record after record, stealing the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time from Joker. It also broke records for the most profitable debut for an R-rated movie, and the biggest July opening for any film.
