Preikestolen in Norway is a popular destination for hikers and movie lovers alike as the nearly 2,000-foot cliff was the site of a high-flying stunt in a Mission: Impossible movie a few years ago. But seeing it in person doesn't come without risks, and a recent visitor just met a tragic fate at the natural landmark.
Nina Thommesen, a police attorney for the local authorities, confirmed to CNN that a man in his 40s died on June 2 after falling from the 1,981-foot cliff. He was reportedly traveling alone and found with his phone and ID, and the police are "reasonably certain" of his identity.
"The police are investigating the case as a fall accident," Thommesen said. "We have no assumptions that anything criminal has happened." A witness claimed he saw the man slip and fall from the edge.
Known in English as "Pulpit Rock," Preikestolen is a picturesque location overlooking the Lysefjord fjord in southwestern Norway. According to the country's official tourism website, it attracts more than 300,000 visitors every year. It's a big draw for mountain hikers, but it gained even more fame in 2018 when it was featured in Mission: Impossible – Fallout starring Tom Cruise.
Though it's in Norway, the location in the film is meant to be Kashmir in South Asia. In the movie's final minutes, the two main characters fall off the cliff in a nail-biting action sequence.
It was a big moment for Preikestolen — so much so that 2,000 fans hiked to the overlook to watch the movie when it came out. At the time, Cruise called the premiere "the most impossible screening" of the action flick.
