Yesterday, it was widely reported that quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Maxx Crosby got into an altercation during practice. Now, a quarterback and defensive end getting into it isn’t the strangest thing, as they are natural enemies on the football field. However, as they are both currently on the Raiders, so it was a bad look all around.

ESPN reported on the incident.

“Defensive end Maxx Crosby hit quarterback Kirk Cousins twice during the team period. When Crosby hit Cousins' arm a second time, the 15-year veteran had had enough. Cousins got into Crosby's face, grabbing the All-Pro's jersey, while both exchanged words before it was broken up.”

That scuffle led to both players being held out of practice on Saturday, according to head coach Klint Kubaik.

“We have very clear expectations on how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business, and we violated that yesterday."

It seems Kubaik’s main concern is that if they let that kind of thing go in practice, it could flow over into actual games.

"Those are two leaders on our team going at it," Kubiak said. "Obviously, fighting in a game [or] you throw a punch in a game, you are out of the game. So we got to be smart."

Tight End Michael Mayer had a pretty levelheaded reaction to the fighting when he met with the media after practice.

"It's energy, man," Mayer said. "We don't want to be throwing punches, but I think on any padded day of camp there's going to be some [scuffles]."

While it is true that padded practices can get heated, it’s important for Kubaik, in his first year with the team, to lay down the law and establish the kind of culture he wants. Having just served as the offensive coordinator for the reigning Super Bowl Champion Seahawks, who were the 7th-least penalized team, it makes sense that Kubaik is so hard on players who get into fights.
