Scott Eastwood is spilling on some on-set tension between his legendary father, Clint Eastwood, and actor Kevin Costner.

As Scott tells it, his dad checked Costner’s “ego” while the two worked together on the 1993 thriller A Perfect World. While both actors appeared in the film, Eastwood also directed the movie—his 18th time in the director’s chair.

The actor/director’s son shared the tale during an August 3 appearance on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, while promoting his new movieLucky Strike

Clashing on Set

Speaking with Shepard and co-host Monica Padman, Scott was asked about his father’s vibe on set and whether he’s an “Alpha” behind the camera.

“I heard a legendary story and I’m sort of going to paraphrase it, and I’ll probably tell it a little wrong,” Eastwood prefaced his story.

“Kevin Costner sort of going through maybe the Kevin Costner rise to fame, maybe got a big ego, blah, blah, blah,” he continued. “They were doing Perfect World. They’re both starring in this movie; my dad is directing.”

“Apparently, Kevin wouldn’t come out of his trailer for some reason,” Eastwood then claimed, saying that, in general, his father “doesn’t do trailers” when making movies.

“He’s like, ‘Just be on set.’ He always told me as a kid, ‘You want to learn how to make movies, you want to learn how to do this, you stay here with everybody else and you make the damn movie,’” shared the director’s son.

“So he just said, ‘We’ll send him home then.’ They said, ‘What do you mean, he’s in the scene?’ ‘Send him home,’” Eastwood continued. “So he sent him home and they went to Kevin said, ‘Hey, you’re going to go home for the day.’ He’s like, ‘What do you mean, I’m in the scene?’”

The crew’s response? “I guess you’re not anymore. Clint changed that.”

“So that’s the pecking order. I think the next day he was on set, ready to go,” Scott concluded his story. So far, Costner himself has not commented publicly on Eastwood’s version of events.

Speaking more generally, Scott said his father likes to move quick when filming, hoping everyone involved comes to set “ready to work.” He added, “You better know your s–t.”

What Is ‘A Perfect World’?

Set in the 1960s, A Perfect World is a crime thriller in which Costner stars as a convict who takes a young Jehovah’s Witness boy hostage after escaping from a Texas prison.

On his tail is a Texas Ranger, played by Eastwood. The cast of the 1993 film also included Laura Dern, Bradley Whitford, and T. J. Lowther as the kidnapped child.

While the film, made on a $30 million budget, wasn’t exactly a box office hit in the United States—pulling in just $31.1 million—it exceeded expectations overseas, ending with an international gross of $102.5 million. Critically, it fared better and currently sits at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Eastwood, however, knew the movie would face an uphill battle upon release.

“I always felt this movie was high risk,” he told The New York Times. “I just liked the story. Sure, a lot of people are disappointed. But if you don’t grow up, you just get in a rut.”

“You can make sequels and imitations and make some dough,” he continued. “But you’ve got to make a wide variety of things so someday people look back and say, ‘Hey, he tried, he did this, he took some risks.’”

A Perfect World is streaming now on YouTube.
