Texting is an important component of modern dating, but it shouldn't replace the dates themselves, a popular dating coach warns singles.
Erika Ettin, the founder of A Little Nudge dating, unveiled an Instagram video this weekend on the topic of excessive texting.
'Texting is not dating'
In the video, Ettin revealed snippets of an anonymous texting convo between a man and a woman who had been on one date together. The woman does not want to spend much time texting the man during the 3-to-4 week period he is supposed to be away, and simply wants to focus on setting up a second date.
However, the man indicates he wishes to text frequently during this time. This scenario where consistent texting replaces in-person communication early in a budding relationship is a no-no, Ettin says.
"Texting builds a false sense of intimacy. True interest is getting a date on the calendar," Ettin captioned the post.
Ultimately, the two people in the video wound up not being "aligned," and there was no second date.
"This is someone that you're just getting to know, so they shouldn't be privy to the day-to-day minutiae yet," Ettin says. "In the early stages of getting to know someone, in-person time is invaluable. Texting is not dating."
Who is Erika Ettin?
A former economist and longtime financial sector employee, Ettin took her own online dating experiences and used them as inspiration to start her practice in 2011.
"Her philosophy is that if you market yourself well, you'll get more dates," Ettin's website says. "And, the more first dates you go on, the higher the probability that you’ll have a connection with someone, simply by increasing your odds."
