The Pima County sheriff, Chris Nanos, is responding a major new report claiming there may be video in the Nancy Guthrie case.
Nanos made the comments during an interview on KVOI AM1030's Buckmaster Show on Friday, June 26, 2026. He doesn't believe the new claim, including of a possible video and suspect addresses, is real. That show is located in Tucson, where Nancy lives.
“I think the FBI has done a number of arrests for false or fake ransom notes,” Nanos told the hosts, according to Newsweek. “It's a shame that that happens, but I think we're looking at another one of those today.” Newsweek reported that he was specifically referring to the note sent to TMZ about the video, although there have been other ransom note claims.
The fate of Nancy Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tucson home on February 1, remains unknown, even though the FBI and sheriff previously released chilling door cam photos showing a masked and armed suspect.

TMZ reported on June 26 that the outlet had received a new note that it authenticated as being from the same account as a previous note demanding Bitcoin.
The new note is "from the person claiming to know the identities of Nancy Guthrie's kidnappers, and this time he says he has video of the "main guy" and Nancy the day she died," TMZ revealed.
He added, "I am not the idiot who recently called in a tip about her burial site in Mexico," and he denied reports that the previous ransom note was written by a woman, TMZ reported.
"I have a phone stashed in a secure location guaranteeing both the information it stores and the safety of the phone," the email said, according to TMZ. He goes on to say, "What it contains is my definition of delivering them on a silver platter, a short video of the main guy with Nancy the day that was probably her last, pictures of both involved, names and addresses and age." He also claimed there are two kidnappers, the entertainment site reported.
Sheriff Chris Nanos Says the Nancy Guthrie Investigation Is 'Ongoing'
The sheriff said little else on the show. “I can't tell you much more on that, because it would be inappropriate. It is ongoing," he added, according to Newsweek.
He also said that high-profile cases can produce fake notes, adding, according to Newsweek, "It is a shame that these type of events occur, people have great interest… that’s good because it helps us, but then it gets really gets abused."
“People who call in fake ransom notes, people who claim for the sake of media and the family, they get out and disturb, in this case, an entire neighborhood.”
There is a major reward in the case. Authorities have said that they have ruled out only Guthrie's kids and their spouses as potential suspects in the missing person's case, which they believe was an abduction. They found drops of Guthrie's blood on her front stoop, per a previous press conference from the sheriff.
