Simon & Garfunkel are widely regarded as one of the most iconic music duos in the history of the music industry. They topped the charts twice in the 1960s with "The Sound of Silence" and "Mrs. Robinson." Still, they reached the height of their commercial success in 1970 when "Bridge Over Troubled Water" hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song first reached Billboard's top spot on February 28, 1970, and held that slot for six weeks straight. So 56 years ago today, on March 6, 1970, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was already a week into that dominant run and had five more weeks of being on top to go. That remarkable staying power shows that the beloved song performed by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel connected with listeners around the world. It also finished as No. 1 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 for 1970.
Why ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ Is One of the Greatest Songs Ever Written
Of course, labeling any song one of the greatest ever recorded is always going to be subjective. Yet, many objective facts about Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" prove that the track has earned that kind of praise.
One clear sign of its greatness comes from Rolling Stone. In 2004, the outlet ranked the track at number 48 on its list of the Greatest Songs of All Time. When that list was updated 20 years later, in 2024, Rolling Stone called "Bridge Over Troubled Water" the 66th Greatest Song of All Time. Even with an untold number of songs released in the intervening two decades, the song remained such a stellar piece of art that music experts still held it in that level of esteem.
Other major honors show the songs iconic status too. For example, it won the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year Grammy Awards. Additionally, the record that "Bridge Over Troubled Water" appeared on was included in Time's All-Time 100 Albums list in 2010.
The hardest thing to quantify, but perhaps the most meaningful, is how the song still resonates deeply with listeners, myself included. In fact, the track's opening notes are so easily recognizable that they can evoke real emotions in a matter of seconds.
