As more information emerges surrounding the brutal murders of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, a disturbing timeline in the hours before their deaths has been established. The last time the Reiners were seen alive was at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party, where it was reported that they had “a very loud argument” with their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner. But the argument came at the end of a tense evening in which Nick reportedly made a number of famous guests deeply uncomfortable, and even had a scary confrontation with former SNL star Bill Hader. Nick has been charged with murder in connection with his parents’ deaths.
Nick Reiner's Disturbing Behavior at Conan O'Brien's Christmas Party Revealed
The guest list at O’Brien’s party included not only Hader and a cadre of younger talent and industry executives, but also legendary names like Jane Fonda. According to a source who spoke to People on condition of anonymity, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”
Nick had not been formally invited to O’Brien’s party, but according to sources with knowledge of the event, Rob asked the former Late Night host if his troubled kin, who had been living in his parents’ guest house, could tag along. Reports indicate that Rob and Michele had grown increasingly worried about Nick’s behavior and mental health in the weeks preceding the murders, and Rob wanted Nick to accompany them that night so that they could keep an eye on their son. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nick stood out amongst the other guests for several reasons, but notably because he wore a hoodie and jeans whereas the other guests were clad in formal attire.
Nick Reportedly Had Confrontation with Bill Hader
But the elder Reiner's plan backfired in startling fashion. As Nick, who grew up beside A-listers in the industry, made the rounds, more and more guests grew uncomfortable with his energy. Many at O’Brien’s party wondered if Nick, who stands over six feet and weighs 230 pounds, was a civilian who had wandered in from off the street. But as word spread that Nick was actually the son of Rob and Michele Reiner, so did talk of the young man’s lifelong struggles with addiction and mental health issues. “Compassion was quietly urged. Sympathies and concerns for his parents, one of whom was a Hollywood giant, were expressed,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
But even as guests became attuned to who he was, Nick continued to confront guests. According to WSJ, Nick repeatedly asked guests the same three questions: "What's your name? What's your last name? Are you famous?"
At one point, he reportedly approached Hader as the Barry star spoke with two other people and asked him the same questions, despite having been introduced to Hader by his father earlier in the evening. “Hader calmly responded to Nick that he was engaged in a private conversation, according to someone with knowledge of the situation,” per THR. “Nick glared at him for what felt like an uncomfortable amount of time.”
Nick and Rob Had 'a Very Loud Argument' That Stopped the Party
Shortly after Nick’s confrontation with Hader, O’Brien’s party came to an abrupt halt as the sounds of “a very loud argument” pierced the cheery veneer. “It was Rob and his son, having it out over Nick’s asocial and unsettling behavior,” THR reported. Several minutes after the shouting match, a “mortified” Rob and Michele apologized to O’Brien for the chaos and promptly left the event. It’s still unclear if Nick left with them.
It’s still unclear exactly what happened between the Reiners leaving O’Brien’s party and 3:30 p.m. the following day, when Rob’s body was discovered at home by his 28-year-old daughter, Romy. Romy fled the home and called police, only later becoming aware that her mother was also dead inside the house. Reports indicate that rigor mortis had set in for both Rob and Michele when they were found. Rigor mortis typically sets in between two and six hours after death.
Nick Was Spotted Near His Parents' Home Before Murders
Just before midnight on the day of the murders, Nick was spotted on a gas station’s security camera walking calmly just blocks from his parents’ home. Several hours later, around 4 a.m., he checked into a room at the Pierside Santa Monica hotel. Before he was arrested around 9 p.m. that evening, hotel staff found Nick’s room covered in blood, with bed sheets covering the windows. Nick has been charged with two counts of murder and could face the death penalty due to there being more than one victim. He’s being held at Twin Towers Correctional Center without bond.
