Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham is certainly not shy about speaking her mind.
Last Friday, Cunningham posted a TikTok video in which she played a verse from Sabrina Carpenter's "Manchild"--"Stupid, or is it slow? Maybe it’s: useless.”--along with the caption "@ some refs" over the clip. It was a very clear critique of the WNBA officiating.
On Wednesday, Cunningham revealed that she was fined by the league, and she took a jab back at the W in the process.
"I got fined $500 for this TikTok idk why this is funny to me… like ok you got it bud! Cause there’s not more important things to be worried about with our league right now," Cunningham wrote.
Cunningham, 28, who is in her seventh WNBA season and first with Indiana, is far from the first member of the league to blast its officiating.
Her teammate, Caitlin Clark, had a heated exchange with one referee last month, while Fever head coach Stephanie White has called out officials on multiple occasions.
"When the officials don't get control of the ballgame, and they allow that stuff to happen ... this is what happens," White told the media following an altercation between the Fever and Connecticut Sun last month.
"You've got competitive women, who are the best in the world at what they do, right? And when you allow them to play physical, and you allow these things to happen, they're going to compete. And they're going to have their teammates' backs. It's exactly what you'd expect ― right? ― out of fierce competition ... I started talking to the officials in the first quarter, and we knew this was gonna happen."
Additionally, Chicago Sky All-Star Angel Reese said the league's referee issue “has to be fixed” after a game earlier this month and Los Angeles Sparks star Kelsey Plum called the officiating “f–----g absurd" back in June.
