Ralph Macchio has been playing the unmistakable Daniel LaRusso in some form or another since the highly-regarded Karate Kid debuted in theaters way back in 1984.
After some relatively quick follow-up sequels in Karate Kid II (1986) and Karate Kid III (1989), Macchio seemingly came out of nowhere in 2018 to reprise the role once again, delivering six seasons of Cobra Kai, the popular television series that ultimately found its home on Netflix.
Of course, with the premiere of Karate Kid: Legends on May 27, the legend of Daniel LaRusso is still very much going strong a whopping 41 years later.
In an exclusive with People, the 63-year-old actor offered up some distinct differences in the new movie—co-starring Jackie Chan—that apparently separates itself from the prior installments of the iconic film franchise.

"[Karate Kid: Legends] has different [and] more of like an early Jackie Chan movie style, a Hong Kong style," Macchio explained. "The fight [scenes], the cameras are really wide lenses inside the fights. There's humor laced throughout and there was always humor in the Karate Kid films, but the original films we made was kind of cinema magic, very romantic."
"This is a quicker pace for this generation," Macchio continued. "But laced with humor, excitement, next level martial arts and [co-star] Ben Wang is a rock star in the movie."
Referring to the forthcoming film as having an "early Jackie Chan" style along with having a quicker pace certainly doesn't sound like a bad thing for a series of movies that have already provided audiences with several memorable fight scenes, including Mr. Miyagi famously saving LaRusso (4:30-minute mark) from Cobra Kai in the 1984 original.
But so far, with only the critics' score to run with, the movie currently sits at just 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, it'll be interesting to see if audiences have a vastly different opinion of the film once Karate Kid: Legends releases nationwide on Friday, May 30.
