It's been four long years since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concluded its run on Disney+; fully depicting Sam Wilson's (Anthony Mackie) transformation into Captain America. And now, as Marvel begins its crop of 2025 big superhero films, leading up to the return of The Avengers in 2026, there's a lot riding on Captain America: Brave New World. So, what's the deal? Is it a comeback movie? Something akin to 2014's The Winter Soldier? Or are we dealing with a misfire on the level of Ant-Man: Quantumania?
It all depends on who you ask. As of February 12, the social media embargo for brief reviews of Captain America: Brave New World has been lifted, and the quips from big critics are all over the place. "...looks like Marvel got that Netflix memo about characters having to say everything they do so an inattentive audience can keep up," wrote noted critic Hoai-Tran Bui. "Extreme Disney+ series energy." Meanwhile, Herb Scribner of the Washington Post said: "Absolute blast. All-in on the story. It just checked so many boxes for me. Felt like an MCU movie where other projects actually matter again. Lots of cohesion. Mackie rocks, Ford is great."
In fairness, even if Brave New World is less-than-stellar, nobody expects Mackie and Ford to be bad. The bigger question is if Brave New World make a grounded Captain America movie in the style of the 2011 film or the popular sequel, The Winter Solider.
YouTuber Chris Parker dropped a sort of mash-up of these concerns, noting that: "Loved Mackie as Cap & I appreciated the more serious tone but it did feel slightly empty."
Captain America: Brave New World's Rotten Tomatoes score is currently 47 percent, after debuting with 54 percent score. But some noted critics are even taking issue with that. "This movie is much better than 54%," Ryan Arey of ScreenCrush tweeted.
Either way, the film is projected to make $90 million at the box office over the upcoming holiday weekend.
