Did anybody ask for a direct-to-streaming Apple TV+ movie in which two snipers prevent hell from opening up into our world? Also, did we want this kind of movie on Valentine's Day? The answer to these questions, is, apparently, yes, because the Apple TV+ movie The Gorge has arrived. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller as two star-crossed snipers, tasked with guarding the titular hole-in-the-ground, to protect us all from weird tree demons.
Currently, The Gorge holds a 63 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from respectable movie critics and 80 percent from general audiences. Is this because people recognize that this is a crowd-pleaser movie designed to be watched while clutching a tub of coffee-flavored Haagen-Dazs? Again, the answer is yes. Part rom-com, part made-for-TV movie from the 1990s, The Gorge is the kind of weird mash-up movie that is so dumb, that it's secretly amazing.
If you're wondering why two opposing governments have only sent two snipers to guard what appears to be the mouth of hell, you're clearly not going to have fun watching this movie. Directed by Scott Derrickson, who gave us the first Doctor Strange, and Black Phone, this is a throwback kind of movie. It will remind you of a simpler time, in which we could love silly sci-fi thriller like Tremors and not worry too much about deeper meaning, or anything making sense at all.
The narrative chaos of The Gorge is a feature, not a bug. And no matter how many bad reviews you read of this movie, you should still give it a shot.
The Gorge is streaming on Apple TV+.
