As Americans are increasingly looking for quieter and more affordable places to settle down, the Carolinas are currently seeing an influx of people moving into the region. And the trend marks a shift from last year, when Florida was the national hotspot for those looking to relocate.

The findings comes from PODS fourth annual Moving Trends Report, which analyzed customer data to learn the top spots of where people are moving to. Whereas last's year's report had Florida claiming half the spots on the top 10 list, this year North Carolina and South Carolina boasted that honor.

Though Florida made quite the showing in 2023, for the second consecutive year in a row, Myrtle Beach, SC and Wilmington, NC tied for the top spot on the list. This year, those cities were joined by Charlotte, NC, Asheville, NC, and Raleigh, NC; the latter of which jumped up 14 places from last year to land in the number six spot in 2024.

But it's not just the Carolinas, specifically, that's seeing a boom of new residents. Further down the list, the entire Southern Appalachian region also had an impressive showing with several top 20 spots in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. As the company points out, the Southeast is likely a draw thanks to features such as a lower cost of living, great food scenes, easy access to nature, and vibrant metro areas.

As people are beginning to eschew the higher costs of living in major metropolitan cities, the region provides similar modern amenities and cultural experiences at a more reasonable price point.

"Last year, we noted the Carolinas were worth watching, and this year, they've not only taken the trophy as the number one spot for new moves but also broken a record," said Rich Schwartz, SVP of Corporate Operations at PODS, in a press release. "On the flip side, we're continuing to see a throughline where expensive metro areas are prompting Americans to flock to cities and states where the cost of living is lower, and the lifestyle is more balanced."
