With U2’s residency coming to an end, 3,000 Americans were surveyed to determine which artists they’d most like to see next take up residency at the Las Vegas Sphere. The study was conducted earlier this month across participants wth a median age of 40.4 years. The demographic profiled was largely female, with women comprising 53.7 percent of the pool and men making up 44.4 percent.
One of the artists already rumored for a Sphere residency also happened to be the top choice of those surveyed. Lady Gaga, who previously appeared onstage with U2 early on in their residency, led at the top of the list. Helping her case is that Gaga held a rapturously received Las Vegas residency from 2018 until October of last year.
In the number two spot was another Las Vegas veteran, Beyoncé, who performed her 2009 “I Am…Yours” residency at the Wynn. Her choice as a viable Sphere resident comes after her concert film Renaissance amassed an impressive $43 million worldwide. Coldplay took the third slot, while legacy acts Paul McCartney and The Eagles rounded out the top five.
While Dead and Company had been rumored earlier in the summer to be the next Sphere residents, America placed the band ninth and last in the ranking.
The survey also asked which top-streamed artist Americans would most like to see take up a Sphere residency, based on Spotify’s top artists of last year. Unsurprisingly, Taylor Swift took top honors on that list. Lady Gaga prevailed once again, closely trailing Swift at number two. Current Las Vegas residency-holder Bruno Mars came in third. Eminem placed fourth, while returning artist Paul McCartney came in at five.
Participants were then asked which genre of music they’d most like to see at the Sphere, with some surprising results. Pop music came in at number one, topping rock at number two. Hip-hop placed third, followed by metal/punk rock in fourth, and R&B in fifth.
Regardless of which artist graces the Sphere next, they’re all but guaranteed mountains of publicity. The buzzed-about venue has been a major boon to Las Vegas, bringing in an astonishing $75 million and counting since its opening. Oscar-winning filmmaker Darren Aronofsky already produced an original film for the Sphere, while the UFC will hold its first sporting event in 2024.
