Apple confirmed on Monday morning that its Vision Pro headset will be available in the United States beginning on February 2. The spatial computing device will retail for a significant $3,500. Pre-orders open January 19 at 5 a.m. PST.
“The era of spatial computing has arrived,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the launch announcement (via TechCrunch). “Apple Vision Pro is the most advanced consumer electronics device ever created. Its revolutionary and magical user interface will redefine how we connect, create, and explore.”
When it launches, the Vision Pro app store is said to feature “more than 1000,000” iOS and iPadOS applications, as well as experiences tailored to take advantage of the Vision Pro’s groundbreaking technology. Additionally, the device will introduce a new FaceTime interface designed specifically for the headset.
“Players can access games on the App Store, including more than 250 titles on Apple Arcade. Hit games like NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition and Sonic Dream Team can be played on a screen as large as they want with incredible audio and support for popular game controllers,” Apple confirmed in their statement. “New spatial games, including Game Room, What the Golf?, and Super Fruit Ninja, take advantage of the powerful capabilities of Apple Vision Pro to transform the space around players.”
Apple is also offering ZEISS optical inserts for the Vision Pro, with standard reader lenses starting at $99 and prescription lenses costing around $149.
The VisionPro will herald the arrival of a new Apple software, VisionOS, created specifically for the device. Apple promises that VisionOS “delivers powerful spatial experiences, unlocking new opportunities at work and at home.” A three-dimensional interface allows users to use a virtual keyboard or dictation to do their typing, while a simple flick of the wrist or tap of the finger will select their favorite app for use.
